Beyond the Classroom
The Department of Art provides its students with challenges outside the classroom and studio to develop their skills and knowledge of the real world. Gaining practical experience in their discipline, art students have the opportunity to participate in an on-campus practicum and/or an off-campus internship.
Art practicums are available to qualified students in graphic design, visual communication, photography, studio art, pre-art therapy, and museum studies. Practicums provide a practical experience in a supervised on-campus setting that specializes in the field of art or design. They precede an internship and prepare students to perform for employers outside the University community. Placements are available in the following areas:
Students have the opportunity to work on such publications as The Crescent, the university’s student-run newspaper, and the award-winning campus yearbook, The LinC.
Within the UE Publications, students are exposed to the process, production schedules, deadlines and teamwork of a small office that produces a good number of jobs. A typical practicum with UE Publications lasts for 10 hours a week for 15 weeks. Students learn and gain experience with Quark, a layout program, and are given actual University jobs. After proper on-the-job training, students will eventually work on projects such as 4-color posters, logo design and more.

Internship experiences enhance the skills learned in the classroom and can occur either over the summer or during a semester. Interns are placed with local, regional national and international organizations. Some common internships placements exist at the following organizations:
