The Philosophy Program
The University of Evansville offers a Bachelor of Art in Philosophy, giving students the opportunity to study alongside our talented faculty in preparation for success in numerous professions or graduate school programs.
Beyond the Classroom
Whether working as research assistants in UE's Cognitive Science program or presenting at professional conferences, students in the philosophy program have numerous opportunities for practical experience and networking while at UE.
The 20th century philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once wrote, “philosophy is not a theory but an activity.” Along similar lines, we can say that philosophy is not a topic or a body of beliefs, but a skill. This is why the Philosophy Department takes a skills-oriented, discussion-based approach to the perennial and difficult questions that have characterized the discipline since the beginning. Students are challenged to develop their critical thinking and writing skills, which can be applied in a wide variety of jobs. This learning environment is amplified by close interactions with faculty within the classroom and through research. Philosophy faculty do more than simply impart knowledge. Their relationship with students is one of challenge in the context of support – nurturing them to a better life.
