Loreta Janeta Velazquez: The Life and Times of a Cross-Dressing Civil War Soldier

Event Date: Wednesday, March 19, 2014

Time: 4:00 p.m.
Location: Bower-Suhrheinrich Library, J. Henry Schroeder Boardroom, Room 203

This lecture will discuss Loreta Janeta Velazquez’s 1876 work The Woman in Battle: A Narrative of the Exploits, Adventures, and Travels of Madame Loreta Janeta Velazquez.  She provides a dramatic recounting of her exploits as a cross-dressing soldier fighting for the Confederacy.  Though not a very good fighter, Velazquez places herself in the center of the most hotly contested battles of the war.
