University cultural and arts events enhance community life

The University of Evansville hosts an exciting array of cultural activities that are open to the public as well as the campus community. The events showcase the talents of students and faculty, and bring world-renowned professionals to the local area for performances, presentations, and meetings with students. A daily listing of events is available on the Campus Calendar.

Art: From outdoor sculpture displays to studio exhibitions in Krannert Gallery on campus in Krannert Hall of Fine Arts, the University Art Department events feature works by students, faculty, alumni and guest artists.

International Week:
International students share their customs and traditions with the campus and community during a week-long series of activities during spring semester. Additional events, including an International Bazaar during Fall Semester, are scheduled throughout the year.

Lecture Series: (All lecture series events are free and open to the public.)

Patricia H. Snyder Concert and Lecture Series, now celebrating its 15th season, is made possible through an endowment from the late Patricia H. Snyder, trustee and longtime friend of the University. Events have featured prominent speakers and performers such as Elie Wiesel, Julian Bond, the Monks of Tibet’s Drepung Loseling Monastery and Ray Bradbury.

Institute for Global Enterprise International Speaker Series is funded by Lilly Endowment, Inc., and brings well known public figures such as Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield (Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream) to the community each year.

Other annual speaker series include the Andiron Lecture Series, Crick Lecture Series, and English Coffee Hours.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events: The Mays Martin Luther King Jr. lectureship, a presentation by the Black Student Union, and a re-enactment of the 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington mark the University’s celebration of this holiday. Additional Office of Diversity events are scheduled throughout the year.

Music: Evansville’s Department of Music provides an ongoing schedule of events featuring guest artists, students, and faculty. Offerings include performances and workshops by brass ensembles, jazz bands, the University of Evansville symphony orchestra, choral concerts, opera, instrumental and vocal soloists, and more. Events take place on campus in Wheeler Concert Hall and in Neu Chapel, as well as at the Victory Theatre at 600 Main Street in Downtown Evansville. Details are available on the Department of Music Concert Calendar.

Theatre: The University of Evansville’s Department of Theatre is one of the most celebrated in the nation, and presents classic plays and exciting new works throughout the academic year in Shanklin Theatre and May Studio Theatre on campus. Details about this year's productions are available at 2007-08 Theatre Season.

University Traditions: A special Vespers Service in Neu Chapel, followed by the campus lighting ceremony in Memorial Plaza ushers in the Christmas holiday season at the University of Evansville each year. In February, Founders Day events focus on a worship service with a special guest speaker who presents the Edgar M. McKown address. The University is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

“The college must serve its community. It must not only be in the community, but of it as well.” – Alfred F. Hughes, president of Evansville College (1916-1919)
