History faculty and students examine historical events to understand how current issues have been profoundly shaped by the past. Students gain an appreciation of the breadth of problems facing the world and acquire skills to face these problems with reason and judgement. To achieve these goals, the Department has created a program that is coherent and logical with attractive highlights. Freshmen take two introductory-level courses in World and American history and a course that asks them to examine various "approaches to history." More advanced students take a variety of upper-level courses that explore particular regions and time-periods in depth. Juniors and senior enroll in 400-level special-topic seminars with limited enrollments. The program concludes with the senior thesis, a major piece of research on a focused question of the student's choice. History majors are also required to take two years of a foreign language.
