Academic Support Services

A Mission of Learning

At the University of Evansville, we are dedicated to active learning and scholarship. Our highest priority is the educational needs and interests of our students. Through many academic support services, we offer students the resources to realize their highest potential. All of the following academic support services are free to UE students:

  • The Center for Academic Advisement is a central headquarters for all academic concerns. Housed within the Registrar's Office, the Center for Academic Advisement can offer assistance with major and advisor changes, graduation checklists, undeclared students, and any other academic matters.

  • Faculty advisors, with the support of the Center for Academic Advisement, work closely with students to help them make wise choices regarding their academic career and develop intelligent, responsible self-management.

  • Individual Tutoring in many subject areas is free to all University of Evansville students through the Center for Academic Advisement.

  • Supplemental Instruction is offered for several of our traditionally challenging courses. Supplemental Instruction, or SI, is peer facilitated study sessions led by students who have taken the course before and have done exceptionally well. SI creates a collaborative learning environment where students can compare notes, hold discussions and predict test questions.

Studies have shown that students who attend SI earn higher course grades and withdraw less often than non-SI participants.

  • The Writing Center is an invaluable resource to all UE students. Many elements of the University of Evansville core curriculum are writing intensive. Writing Center consultants are available to help students with every step of the writing process from brainstorming to proofreading. The Writing Center mission is to help students to become more comfortable with writing and to be better, more confident writers.

  • Academic Counseling is available through the Office of Counseling and Health Education to aid students in study skills, stress management, test anxiety and time management.

  • The Office of Career Services and Cooperative Education provides a host of programs, which assist students at various stages of their college career - from the freshman year to the senior year and beyond. Students exploring different majors can benefit from career-related testing to identify interests, skills and corresponding career paths. Career counseling is also available.

  • Workshops are periodically offered to the student body on how to make use of valuable university resources, such as the libraries and computer labs.

  • Special academic accommodations can be made through the Office of Counseling and Health Education for students with properly documented special needs or disabilities.

  • Peer Mentors are upperclassmen representing a variety of majors who can offer a student's perspective on academic issues, such as being undeclared or changing majors. Peer Mentors are willing to discuss student concerns and offer the insight and experience of a seasoned student.

  • The UE Freshmen Council was created by the 2002-03 Student Government Association to provide a new outlet for freshmen-specific co-curricular programming and serve as a freshmen issues forum.

  • Reference Assistance and Research Services comprise a multi-dimensional information program offered to students by the UE Libraries. Services utilize the expertise of librarians in finding online and print materials, teaching the fundamentals of information literacy, and compiling suggested sources for academic majors.

Important service components include inflite, an online tutorial focusing on research skills, Ask-a-Librarian which allows reference questions to be submitted by e-mail, and RAP, one-on-one research collaboration between students and librarians. Contact the UE Libraries at 488.2482 or visit the Libraries' web site libraries.evansville.edu for more information.
