UE to Celebrate "Abraham Lincoln and the Constitution" on Wednesday

Published: September 14, 2009

The University of Evansville will celebrate Constitution Day a day early this year with a program spotlighting “Abraham Lincoln and the Constitution.”

The program, scheduled for Wednesday, September 16 at 4:00 p.m., will honor the bicentennial year of Lincoln’s birth, with a nod toward Indiana’s role as a formative place in Lincoln’s boyhood. William E. Bartelt, author of “There I Grew Up: Remembering Lincoln’s Indiana Youth,” will be the featured speaker.

The event, which will be held in Harkness Hall (room 164) of UE’s Schroeder Family School of Business Administration Building, is free and open to the public.

“Each year, the University of Evansville is proud to offer an exciting program to celebrate the American Constitution and its pivotal role in our nation’s history and our government,” said Robert Dion, UE associate professor of political science. “And this year, we’re honored to welcome one of the leading scholars on Lincoln’s Indiana roots in William Bartelt, whose unparalleled knowledge of President Lincoln and his ties to this area will provide tremendous insight to our students and any members of the Evansville community who join us for this celebration of America.”

Bartelt is a retired educator who, for more than 15 years, was employed as a ranger and historian at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. He is a member of the federal Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission’s advisory and education committees, and serves as vice-chair of the Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. He served as an adjunct professor at the University of Southern Indiana from 1986 until 2007, and received the Indiana Historical Society’s Hoosier Historian Award in 2003.
