Martin Luther King Day Activities

Marchers Come Out to Honor the Legacy of MLK

UE students, faculty, and staff joined community members Monday, January 15, in the annual Re-Enactment of the March on Washington D.C. Despite cold and wet weather, the marchers made their way to the C.K. Newsome Community Center where they were joined by an even larger group to watch and enjoy performances by children from Joshua Academy, the African American Choral Ensemble, and UE freshman and member of the Black Student Union, Stephen Wilson.

Later in the afternoon, community members came together in Neu Chapel to hear the Memorial Baptist Church Mass Choir and the Rev. James Cone, Charles A. Briggs Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Cone was the guest speaker for the annual Mays Martin Luther King Jr. Lectureship. This is the 19th year the University has celebrated this holiday with a lecture, march, and activities by the Black Student Union.

Comedy Night to Kick Off Semester at UE Friday

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) at the University of Evansville has planned a NSCS Kick-Off Party Comedy Night on Jan. 19, featuring national comedians Jason Douglas and Fielding Fowler. The event begins at 7 p.m. in Dunigan Hall of the Union and is open to the public. Admission is $5 for the public; $4 for UE students. Proceeds generated will go toward NSCS scholarships at UE.

Jason Douglas has been seen on Comedy Central and heard regularly on the “Bob & Tom Radio Show” and XM Satellite Radio. He has performed with some of the biggest comedians working today including Ron White, Dave Attell, Robert Klein, Carrot Top, George Wallace and Pauly Shore. He has also performed with many musical legends like Smokey Robinson, Three Dog Night, Foreigner and Kenny G.

Fielding Fowler, described as being original and entertaining, offers absurd observations made even funnier by his unique delivery. Often confused with someone raised in the Bronx, this 30-something discusses everything from Wal-Mart to Youtube.
