Faculty and students battle it out at the Honors Program "Nerd Wars - Battle of the Brains"

Twenty-eight student and faculty teams converged on November 6 for the annual Honors Program, "Nerd Wars - Battle of the Brains" an academic game show.  Each of the teams, consisting of four honors students or faculty, were asked scholarly questions to see who was more knowledgeable.

How "nerdy" are you?

Try these questions:

1. The main character of this novel is accused of treason by Caderousse, Fernand Mondego, and Danglars. His name is Edmond Dantes, and he eventually assumes the title used as the name of the book. Name this 1844 work by Alexandre Dumas. (see below for answer)

2. Somebody decides to toss a coin repeatedly until heads comes up two times. What is the probability that it takes exactly three tosses to get two heads? (see below for answer)

It was an exciting championship round with the student team and faculty team battling back and forth for the lead.  Finally, the faculty captured the win by one point. Proceeds from the event were donated to local charities.

Answers: 1. Count of Monte Cristo 2. 1/4 (or .25 or 25 percent)

On November 10 and 11, students and faculty from both the Honors Program and Archaeology Club traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, to visit the Science Center and to Collinsville, Illinois, to see Cahokia Mounds.  "It was great," said Cherie Leonhardt, director of scholar recruitment and assistant to the honors program.  "Funding provided by the Honors Program enables students to experience off-campus learning to places like the Science Center, Cahokia Mounds, and our trip last year to Chicago for the King Tut exhibit."
