UE Team Wins NASA Moon Buggy Competition A team of 10 students from the University of Evansville topped the competition at the April 5 Moon Buggy competition in Huntsville, Alabama, marking the first time a UE team has won the competition. With a time of four minutes, 17 seconds, the UE team beat their nearest competitor by more than 30 seconds. Senior Jesse Kahle, project manager for the Moon Buggy stated, "We're thrilled that NASA gave us the opportunity to work on this project - a simulation of a real-life project NASA handled in the 1970s. It's been a tremendous learning experience, and to win the competition is a wonderful bonus." Visit the Evansville Courier and Press to read additional coverage of the event. UE Opera to Perform April 25 and 26 This year's University of Evansville spring opera performance is planned for Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheeler Concert Hall. The performances will feature Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, two one act operas by operatic master Giacomo Puccini, who composed other masterpieces like La Boheme and Tosca. Suor Angelica is a tragic story of a young nun suffering the loss of her illegitimate child, while Gianna Schicchi is a hilarious tale of greed and love surrounding the death of a wealthy man. UE Opera will present both in their original Italian, but audiences won't miss a word because a helpful translation will be shown as the productions unfold. This process of using 'supertitles' has become standard practice among professional opera companies and will be utilized for the first time at UE this spring. Admission is free, so come and enjoy watching - and hearing - UE students performing these classic works. UE to Host Great Lakes Regional Engineering Competition April 25-26 April 25-26 students from 15 regional universities will be in Evansville to compete in several civil engineering competitions. It all begins Friday, April 25, at 8:30 a.m. with the concrete canoe competition at Audubon State Park in Henderson, Kentucky. Judges will look at the aesthetics of the canoes and make sure they can pass a "swamp test," which - for safety reasons - ensures that a canoe can float even if tipped over. "The range of events these students compete in truly make this event one-of-a-kind," said Brian Swenty, chair of UE's Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering. "We're proud and excited to host the event at UE this year, and we're incredibly excited to see the steel bridge designs, the balsawood bridges, and the concrete canoes, including the newest model from the five-time defending national champions from the University of Wisconsin-Madison." The concrete canoe races begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by the balsawood bridge competition at 1:00 a.m. Additional events include a steel bridge competition, a concrete baseball bat competition, social events, and an awards dinner.
