2014 Honoring Women Veterans Conference Summary

On June 14, 2014, the University of Evansville, Evansville Vet Center, and the Department of Veterans Affairs VA Health Care/Marion, Illinois presented the fifth annual Honoring Women Veterans Conference on UE’s campus. The conference was a celebration of the contributions of service women both past and present.

One hundred and thirty two women veterans were in attendance ranging in age up to 104 years old. They traveled across the mid-west to attend. Many attended before and brought new women veteran friends with them.

Components of the conference included presenting of the Colors by the Military Department of Indiana Ceremonial Unit Color Guard and the singing of our National Anthem by Cassandra Waters, former Army Reserves, 380th Quartermaster Battalion from Evansville, Indiana. Lt. Col. Janis Nark, U.S. Army Nurse Corps (Ret) served as key note presenter. Lt. Col. Nark was a combat nurse in Vietnam and again during Desert Storm. Her talk, a cross between stand-up comedy and motivational speech, had the audience laughing and crying!

Attendees went to breakout sessions about “Employment and Job Search Tips for Veterans”, “VA Benefits Q & A”, and “Memory Corner”. The day included a complimentary lunch while enjoying a tribute slide show featuring a photo of each lady along with her military branch, rank, and years of service. The Dress Barn provided a fashion show during lunch, as well. Area businesses and service providers shared information about benefits and services important to women veterans. The day wrapped up with an afternoon of pampering and fun. Area spas and salons sent professionals who gave complimentary hair styles, facials, and massages. A music therapist taught relaxation techniques and clinicians from Healing Touch provided special therapies.

Plans are underway for the 2015 conference set for Saturday, June 6.
