Learn More About Yourself

How did your time at Harlaxton impact your college studies and transform you?

My time at Harlaxton boosted my confidence, made me more independent, and helped to provide me with a more global perspective. When you are living thousands of miles away from home, you’re going to be forced out of your comfort zone. You are in a new place, you don’t know everyone, and you are immersed in a culture that is unlike what you are used to. I started to learn more about myself, gain new skills, and learn new ways of thinking.

What was your favorite thing about studying at Harlaxton?

My favorite thing about Harlaxton was the people. I felt incredibly welcomed by the staff, became friends with all of my classmates, and met many great people on my adventures. Everyone there is going through an experience similar to your own which makes it easy to make connections and long-lasting friendships.

Did you take program-specific classes at Harlaxton, and what was unique about them?

I am majoring in Management and Marketing. While I was at Harlaxton, I took International Marketing. Over the course of the semester, my team and I had to do marketing research and come up with a plan to introduce a product to a foreign country where it did not already exist. We were able to apply what we had learned about the different cultures we had experienced in our weekend travels to help us better understand how to successfully integrate a product into another country.

What piece of advice would you give to someone planning to study at Harlaxton?

Things aren’t always going to go as planned. Even though you bought tickets to fly to Paris, your flight might get canceled and you could end up taking an 11-hour bus ride to get there instead. There are going to be some bumps in the road, but don’t stress out too much.  Sometimes they end up becoming some of your favorite memories.

Why do you recommend studying abroad?

Studying abroad could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for people who want to travel. When else would you get to go on fun adventures in foreign countries every weekend? You get to see the world and experience different cultures with your friends, all while earning your degree.

How has the Manor become your second home? Do you plan to return someday?

The Manor quickly became a home away from home and the amazing people there become your second family, too. We were always excited to get back to our Manor on the hill after a long weekend of traveling so we could catch up with other students and share our experiences. I definitely plan on returning for a visit someday.

Do you have a favorite trip from your time spent abroad?

My favorite trip was a weekend in Iceland. We had a relaxing day at the Blue Lagoon that ended with trying reindeer soup. We completed the Golden Circle and saw lots of waterfalls and geysers. It was beautiful. I even got to cross seeing the northern lights off my bucket list!
