No problem! American education allows students to change their minds about their majors or courses of study. However, it is important for international students to choose the major that best fits their intended field of study when they apply for admission as it may impact their ability to get a visa if they are "undecided". Students may change their course of study at any time as long as they meet the requirements for the particular field of study that they wish to change to.
Harlaxton is not a degree-granting institution; it is the University of Evansville's study abroad site. International students may spend a semester at Harlaxton after their first full year at UE. Your academic advisor will help you decide which semester is best for you.
Submit the International Application for Undergraduate Admission. Be sure that the name on the application is the exact name as used on your passport. You may fill out an application online.
You may pay your application fee with a credit card, wire transfer or a check drawn on a U.S. bank.
- Include a copy of the front page of your passport (photo page).
- Send us your academic records. We need official (original or certified) copies of all records from secondary school and post-secondary institutions. A certified English translation should be attached if the documents are in a language other than English.
-
Take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the IELTS test SAT or ACT.
- You must score at least 61 (internet based) or 500 (paper based) on the TOEFL or a 5.5 on the IELTS to receive unconditional admission. If you score less than 61 IBT or 5.5 IELTS, you may receive conditional acceptance, pending satisfactory completion at a later date.
- If you do not receive the minimum TOEFL, IELTS, SAT or ACT score required by the University, you may choose to start at the University of Evansville's Intensive English Center. (For more information about the Intensive English program, go to www.evansville.edu/intensiveenglish or e-mail iec@evansville.edu).
- Students who are unable to provide required English proficiency results will be required to take an institutional TOEFL upon arrival on campus. Failure to meet the minimum requirement of 500 will necessitate enrollment in the Intensive English Center until the appropriate score is obtained.
- Arrange for a letter of recommendation from a principal, teacher, or person familiar with your academic performance (optional but strongly encouraged).
- Students who have studied at another U.S. university should submit the Student Advisor's Report Form
Once accepted, an I-20 will be issued after you have done the following:
- Include financial documentation of your family's ability to pay costs incurred at the University.
- The Affidavit of Support should be submitted by the person or organization that will be financially responsible for paying your bills while you are at the University. Each sponsor must complete an affidavit.
- Download the I-20 Application and Affidavit of Support Form
- A current bank statement showing a balance that will cover school expenses for a minimum of one academic year as well as financial statements for the prior two months indicating deposits are being made regularly into the sponsor's account.
The University looks for international students who have successfully completed their country's full sequence of preparatory studies and examinations required for high school graduation, who have strong academic achievements, are fluent in English and likely to succeed academically at the University of Evansville.
If you intend to participate on a Division I athletic team, you must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Your eligibility is based on a combination of your high school GPA and SAT test scores as determined by the NCAA clearinghouse. Other international students are not required to take the SAT, but it is strongly recommended. A good performance on the SAT may enhance your chances for a higher scholarship.
The University of Evansville offers financial assistance to international students who are strong academically, but unfortunately, the University is unable to offer full scholarships. Because you must be able to pay for a large portion of your education yourself, you will need to have sufficient financial resources to supplement your scholarship. The guidelines for scholarships are nearly the same for international and U.S. students.
If you qualify for several UE scholarships, you will be awarded whichever award is of greatest financial value. Scholarships for international students generally range form $5,000 - $15,000 per academic year and are based on academic strength.
You must show proof of ability to pay for tuition, room and board, activity, and registration fees, as well as for your personal expenses. This amounts to about $39,426 a year for the 2009-2010 academic year. Your scholarship award will be subtracted from the total amount needed.
The following is an approximate breakdown of expected expenses. Click here for a complete breakdown.
- Tuition for the academic year 2009-2010, beginning in late August and ending in mid-May, is $26,010.
- The cost for room (all double occupancy based on middle price) and meals in the residence halls is estimated at $8,670.
- Students are required to live in the residence halls to qualify for the full amount of scholarship offered.
- An estimated $3,700 is needed for books, medical insurance and personal expenses.
- If you intend to attend classes during the summer, you will need additional funds for summer tuition, housing, food, and personal expenses.
Do not count on working to pay for your education. Campus jobs are limited and off-campus jobs are generally prohibited in the United States. Even if you get an on-campus job, minimum wage in the U.S. is $6.55 an hour and hours are limited. You would not be able to work enough hours to finance your education.
Yes. You may not register for classes until you show proof of medical insurance. Even with medical insurance, you may still incur minimum medical expenses above the insured amount.
Provide complete documentation (in English), including a transcript (with grade), for each course.
We often will also need course descriptions (in English) and any additional material you can furnish about the courses.
You must take at least 63 hours at UE in order to receive a degree from the University of Evansville. Most transfer students are here a minimum of two years.
As soon as we have your application, proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, SAT or ACT), academic records, we will move quickly to determine your admission status. You should hear from us within 1-2 weeks after your file is complete.
Although we will do all we can to help you, we generally must have all required documents before July 1 for an August entry and before November 1 for January entry. We will make the admission decision as soon as possible, but we need time to mail the acceptance packet and I-20 to you, and you need time to get your visa and make travel arrangements.
- After receiving your I-20 or DS-2019 from the University of Evansville, pay your SEVIS fee at www.fmjfee.com, locate the nearest U.S. Embassy and schedule a visa appointment
- Take all of your original academic documents and financial statements along with our letter of acceptance, I-20, passport and SEVIS fee receipt.
- Consult the individual Embassy's website for more information: www.usembassy.gov. Each embassy will provide a list of the documents to bring.
