Parents Council
The Parents Council is an advisory board to the University made up of appointed parent representatives. The Parents Council meets twice a year on campus and its members serve at activities and events as Parents Association volunteers. Parents Council also hears reports about and advises on our parent volunteer support activities: LEAGUE/Admissions Support, Parents' Fund, PIEE/Career Services Support, and Parent Communication and Event Support. The Parents Council also offers appropriate feedback to the administration of the University regarding student concerns and recommendations.
Members of the Parents Council are a resource for all parents and will assist with questions and act as liaisons to appropriate University resources, volunteer opportunities and administrative contacts. The Parents Council is coordinated through the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations.
Greetings, Fellow UE Parents! Welcome to a new academic year!
We are the new co-chairs of the University of Evansville Parents Council, Mairi Winslow and John Epperson. Our daughter Laura is a sophomore Theatre major. We live in Indianola, Iowa, where John teaches Political Science at Simpson College. Mairi is a data warehouse administrator for Pioneer, A DuPont Company. We are excited to be part of the UE family and looking forward to a great year.
As the school year starts, students will be moving into dorms and houses, deciding on board plans, and saving quarters for laundry. Parents are making firm or cautious suggestions about what to take and what not to take ("Do you really need 20 pairs of shoes?" "Don't you want to take a set of towels?"), offering wise-but-probably-unnecessary advice, and preparing to forward mail to a new address. Whether your child is a freshman or a senior, whether he or she has been home all summer or somewhere else, whether this is your first child to leave home or your fourth, whether you're ready for it or not, things are about to change! Your son or daughter is taking further steps toward becoming the adult that he or she will be. The University of Evansville is proud and happy to be part of that process.
For the next nine months your child's primary "home" will be the UE campus. This is where he or she will eat (most of the time!), sleep, study, and play. This edition of the Parents Newsletter focuses on residential life. We hope you'll find it interesting, informative, and helpful. There have been some exciting changes on campus — the new Ridgeway Center is the most obvious and dramatic. It offers lots of new space for studying and for gathering and provides interesting new food options. If you haven't had a chance to visit it yet, go over on your next visit to campus. It's impressive!
An excellent time to visit the Ridgeway Center — as well as the rest of campus — is Family Weekend, September 25 — 27. Family Weekend provides many opportunities to experience bits of the UE life your child lives — enjoy the chance to learn more about it. Take advantage of the opportunity to see a play, listen to a concert, watch a game. Take your son or daughter (and assorted friends!) out to dinner and listen to their stories. Buy a UE t-shirt and wear it proudly!
As the 2009-2010 year begins, the Parents Council is looking for more ways for parents to be involved with the University. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Are there other types of communications you'd like to receive? Do you have questions about the Parents Council or Parents Associations? We'd love to hear from you! How? Please email us at Mairi.Winslow@pioneer.com, epperson@simpson.edu or aw162@evansville.edu (Angela Williams, assistant director of alumni and parent relations).
Have a great year!
Sincerely,
Mairi Winslow and John Epperson,
Co-chairs, University of Evansville Parents Council
