Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about the program, the University of Evansville, or your career path? Let us help you below.
- How is an applicant selected for an interview for admission into the program?
- The UE B/MD Advisory Committee selects applicants to be interviewed based on high school grade point average, SAT or ACT scores, strength of letters of recommendation, and application essay.
- How many applicants are selected for the program each year?
- There are approximately eight applicants offered acceptance into the program and a waitlist of alternates is ranked.
- Once accepted into the program, what major should I select?
- Pre-medicine is NOT a major and there is not a "correct" major for students planning on pursuing a career in medicine. While a major in science is NOT required, because the Indiana University School of Medicine (and most other medical schools) requires several course hours in the sciences, many students in the B/MD program choose to major in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, or neuroscience. However, medical schools desire candidates with diverse interests and backgrounds who are able to think critically and analyze problems. Therefore, students with backgrounds in the liberal arts are also successful. The best advice is to select a major in an area that you are most interested.
- What courses are required?
The prerequisite courses required for entry into the Indiana University School of Medicine include:
- Two semesters of general chemistry with laboratory
- Two semesters of organic chemistry with laboratory
- Two semesters of biology with laboratory
- Two semesters of physics with laboratory
- One semester of biochemistry
- One semester of social science
- One semester of psychology
- Once accepted into the program, does that mean that I have to practice medicine in Southern Indiana?
- No. However, the applicant will need to attend the Evansville campus if they go to the Indiana University School of Medicine. Applicants can go to another medical school if accepted and decide to decline their spot at IUSM.
- What is the University of Evansville’s B/MD acceptance rate to medical school?
- Since the University of Evansville's B/MD program began, of all the students who completed the program and applied to medical school were accepted to either Indiana University School of Medicine or other medical schools. Several students decided to pursue other career paths, including law school, PhD in Biology and Master of Physician Assistance Science.
- When will I hear if I am accepted to the program?
- Students will be notified of acceptance within three weeks of interviewing.
- If accepted, when do I need to let University of Evansville know I intend to accept my spot? And how?
- If accepted, a student has until April 15 to officially accept their spot in the B/MD program. You will secure this by sending your deposit to University of Evansville. Please know, due to the exclusivity of this program, there is an alternate list of students. Please inform UE right away if you decide to decline your spot so we may offer it to another student.
