Placement and Proficiency Tests

Placement Tests

  • Students who have taken French, Spanish, and German in High School or are heritage speakers but are not international students at the time they enroll at UE are required to take a placement test before arriving at their SOAR date. Instructions for how to take the placement test have been sent via email from Admissions. Students must choose a language before the test will populate in Blackboard. If you experience technical problems with Blackboard, please contact the Office of Technology Services at help@evansville.edu for assistance.
  • If students fail to take the placement test before their SOAR, they must contact Ms. Ashley Nels to request a specific date and time to take the French, German, or Spanish placement test.
  • Students who have received a 4 or a 5 on a French, Spanish, and German AP test will place into French, Spanish, or German 311. Students who get a 4 or a 5 on both the Spanish Literature AP test and the Spanish AP test will place into Spanish 311 and get 3 UE elective credits (not Spanish course credit).
  • Students who believe they have not been placed at the appropriate level should contact the Languages and Cultures department.
  • Students who have taken French, Spanish, and German in High School should not just self-place. Please take the placement test.
  • Students who place into 211 will get 9 credits (111, 112, and 211), if they successfully complete Spanish, French, German 211 with a C or better.

Proficiency Tests

  • Students who “place” into 211 and need 111 and 112 for the BS, but do not wish to take 211, or place into 311, and need 111-212 for the BA. must prove proficiency by emailing Mrs. Patterson-Knox, to schedule a proficiency exam and interview with UE FLC faculty. Proficiency will count as Outcome 6 complete, but will not be counted towards your graduation credits.
  • For students seeking to document proficiency in a language not offered at UE, LTI, Clep, AP test scores, and other college accredited proficiency exams are accepted as documentation of language proficiency pending Registrar and Department approval. Proficiency only will count as Outcome 6 complete, but will not be counted towards your graduation credits.
  • For international students who have not gone to high school in the US, the TOEFL exam counts and your Outcome 6 is counted as complete, but no credits are given.
